5pm - 6:30pm (UK time) February 22nd, on Zoom

Scottish Artists Union is delighted to present, layla-roxanne hill (based in the West of Scotland) in conversation with Star Catherine Feliz (based in Los Angeles).

SAU has invited these two accomplished multi-disciplinary artists to have a conversation about their art, writing and curatorial practices, and to reflect upon their recent involvement in COP26. In October 2021, Star Catherine Feliz was part of the First SustainUS QT2SBIPOC Youth Delegation to COP26, and layla-roxanne hill curated a series of exhibitions, with the RotU Collective, that took place in parallel to COP26.

layla-roxanne hill

layla-roxanne hill (she/they) is a writer, curator and organiser, living in Scotland. Her/their work focuses on anti-colonial cultural contributions + the way our conditions move us to act. Art/curatorial practices which investigate + critique the political spheres + the ability of digital cultural productions to (re)create revolutionary/liberatory conditions remain an ongoing interest. She/they is also active in the trade union movement, holding elected positions within the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Scottish TUC (STUC). layla-roxanne is co-author with Dr Francesca Sobande of Black Oot Here: Black Lives in Scotland (Bloomsbury, 2022).

Star Catherine Feliz

Star Catherine Feliz is an interdisciplinary artist and medicine person born and raised in Lenapehoking, aka New York City, with roots in Ayiti, aka Dominican Republic. Entangled across the mediums of sculptural installation, time-based media, and book forms, their work explores earth-based pathways for disarming apparatuses of violence and their cycles of trauma. They are currently an MFA candidate at the University of California, Los Angeles in the department of Interdisciplinary Studio. After almost ten years of studying and practicing community-based herbalism, Star is currently sharing their medicine under the self-started project of Botánica Cimarrón. Their formulas are unique stories that weave together the past, present, and future of Caribbean folk healing to bring living systems back into alignment.
