Cultural cuts reversal
The Scottish Artists Union greatly welcomes the Scottish Government’s reversal of the 10% cut to Creative Scotland’s budget.
The proposed cuts of £6.6 million pounds to Creative Scotland's budget would potentially have had devastating affects on our sector. If this cut had gone ahead, up to 50% of the Regularly Funded Organisations (RFOs) were set to collapse, and at least 8,500 jobs were at risk across all art forms.
Creative Scotland’s RFOs are the foundation, framework and scaffolding of the structural network that provides paid work to many thousands of freelance & employed artists and cultural workers across all art forms, including many SAU members. These are artists & cultural workers who are contributing to communities, throughout Scotland. We believe that a healthy and thriving arts & culture sector is vital for Scotland’s wellbeing and post-pandemic economic recovery!
Thank you to everyone who has worked very hard to campaign against these arts cuts, and to the supporters who signed the CFTA petition or wrote to your MSP!
Thank you also to SCAN, Culture Counts, Campaign for the Arts, and partners, for gathering together vitally important evidence & case studies that illustrate how devastating these cuts would have been in all communities across Scotland. Thank you to the team at STUC who worked with the Creative Industries Trade Union Group (SAU, Musicians Union, Equity, Society of Scottish Playwrights, Writers Guild, BECTU and the Society of Authors) to push back against these cuts.
